BlackBerry RIM 8800

Introduction
The new Blackberry 8800 is the latest device by RIM and offers features like GPS and Push to Talk (PTT) technology. The 8800 looks similar to the Blackberry pearl but is much wider and offers a full QWERTY keyboard. The 8800??™s interface is almost the exact same as the Pearl, nothing has changed other than the icons being a bit bigger. Is it worth upgrading your current Blackberry to the 8800? What new features does it offer? Is it better than the other Windows mobile phones in its class? Read on to find out!!

The 8800 is similar to the Blackberry Pearl but is much bigger in size. Although the 8800 is a tiny bit thinner than the Pearl, you can hardly tell. The 8800 is a lot wider than the Pearl but offers a full QWERTY keyboard instead of the Suretype used in the pearl. Many people like myself, do not like the sure type technology and prefer to use a full fledged keyboard. The keyboard??™s buttons have a raised edge on the surface which makes it a lot easier for typing, but the keys are not spaced out like previous models. Since there is more than one character on each button you need to push the Alt key too often. If you press the alt key twice nothing happens. On the HTC P4350 and other similar Windows devices, when you press the function button twice the function stays on until turned off. This would have been a key feature if Blackberry had included it.

The scroll ball on the 8800 is the exact same found on the Pearl. Many people are used to the old scroll wheel located on the right side of the phone so I think that Blackberry should have included that too. Many new devices are being released with a genuine scroll wheel, (which copied Blackberry by the way) so RIM taking it out on new devices does not make much sense. In my opinion having both the scroll wheel and scroll ball would have been ideal.

Overall the device looks awesome with the same design concept as the Pearl. The chrome side panels look great too but the phone feels like plastic. Older Blackberry devices are known to be sturdy and no matter how many times you drop them, they still work. I cannot say the same for the 8800, it feels like it is not as sturdy and that RIM was more focused on the design than durability.
